When a disc herniates it can cause pain by leaking inflammatory material into the epidural space. This can lead to irritated nerves. Disc herniation can also compress the spinal nerves, causing shooting pain down the leg. This shooting pain is also known as sciatica.
CAUSES
Disc herniation can be a result of natural aging or genetics. A herniated disc may also be caused by trauma, degenerative disc disease or whiplash.
