Our spinal discs act as cushions for our spine and allow movement and flexibility. As we age, those discs lose water content and become weakened and compressed. This can cause arthritis of the spine and spinal stenosis. It can also lead to disc herniation and nerve root compression.
CAUSES
Degenerative disc disease can be a result of natural aging. It can also be caused by repetitive spinal stress, smoking, inactivity or poor posture.
Symptoms
Arm, back, leg and/or neck pain.
Inability to grip/difficulty keeping hold of objects.
Pain with walking or standing.
Weakness in the arms and hands.
Cessation of smoking may also help alleviate symptoms of degenerative disc disease.
